A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson by police probing a late night house fire in Wigan.

Officers were called by the fire service to a report of a blaze at a home on Montrose Avenue, Norley shortly before 11pm on Wednesday January 9.

Residents who had spotted smoke pouring from the first floor of a semi-detached home initially raised the alarm to the emergency services.

Crews in two engines from Wigan and one from Hindley used breathing apparatus, a hose and a ventilation fan to tackle the fire, which was quickly extinguished.

Thankfully no-one was in the building at the time of the incident and no casualties have been reported.

But it has since been revealed that a man aged 23 has been arrested on suspicion of committing arson with intent to endanger life.

A police spokesperson has said that inquiries are ongoing.
