A POLICE probe has been launched after a young man was found hanged next to a Wigan railway line.

A woman walking her dog made the grim discovery near playing fields off Redwood Road, Ince, early on Monday morning.

The as-yet-unidentified man, who is thought to be in his late 20s, was found hanging from fence railings close to the railway bridge off Redbrook.

Emergency services were called, but paramedics were unable to help him and the man was declared dead at the scene.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police (BTP), which is handling the investigation at this early stage, said the matter was, at present, being treated as unexplained.

It is believed the police have a good idea who the man might be, although he is not thought to have been reported missing before the tragic discovery.

The BTP spokesman said: “At 8.31am on Monday, we received a call to say that a man’s body had been found hanging from railings from the railway bridge near to Redbrook Road.

“Police and paramedics were called, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. We are trying to establish the identity of the deceased, and are also investigating the circumstances of this unexplained death.”
