POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman was sexually assaulted in Wigan.

A 35-year-old woman was walking along Careless Lane in Higher Ince, between the late hours of Saturday, April 26, and the early hours of Sunday, April 27, when two men approached her and asked her if she was okay.

The men then left the woman and she was approached by another man, who started talking to her and offered to walk her home.

She agreed and walked onto the playing field opposite Careless Lane with the man.

He then sexually assaulted the woman, then pushed her to the floor and tried to remove her jeans, but the woman managed to escape and ran away.

The man is described as white, about 20-years-old, 5ft 6in to 5ft 7in tall, of slim build and has short mousy brown hair. He spoke with an Irish accent and was wearing a yellow jumper and beige trousers.

Detective Constable Matthew Higham of Wigan division said: “I would ask anyone who may recognise the description of the man to contact the police as soon as possible.

“Our enquiries into this are ongoing and we continue to offer support to the victim, who is still extremely shaken by what happened.”

Police are appealing to the two men who spoke to the woman to contact police, as witnesses, as they may have vital information.

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 1827 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
