It comes after fly-tippers recently dumped household rubbish including a hoover and sofas in Medlock Way, Platt Bridge.

The council said on Facebook: "We know how much our residents love our town and its natural environment that’s why it’s sad to show examples like this recent fly-tip on Medlock Way, Platt Bridge, which spoil it for everyone else."

"The council is working hard to investigate environmental crimes all across the borough and those found responsible will be prosecuted.

"We recently reopened our recycling centres so there is no excuse to dump waste illegally, if residents need to get rid of rubbish then please use them as an essential trip.

"Do not be tempted to use people online who offer to take your rubbish for you and have no waste carriers licence - anyone found to do so will also be culpable."

Council chiefs said new measures in the form of CCTV will be being installed in Platt Bridge to deter anyone who thinks they are above the law.

The council added: "We would encourage residents to be our eyes and ears in the fight against fly-tipping so please report any incidents in confidence via the Report It app or on 01942 404364."

Wigan's recycling centre re-opened in a surprise move last month although there are restrictions.

The health of residents remains the council’s priority so everyone visiting the site must ensure they are observing social distancing measures on arrival.

Traffic management will be in place at all sites and due to safety concerns queueing outside of the site will be restricted, residents may be asked to leave and return at a later time.

While Wiganers visiting their local tips and recycling centres will need to bring ID to prove they live in the borough.
