People living in Hindley Green have been calling for a crossing at the junction of Organ Street and Atherton Road for several years.

The busy stretch has seen a problem with excessive vehicle speed and peaktime traffic jams which residents have said has made the road particularly unsafe for pedestrians.

Local people’s demands for the feature had failed to yield any results in the past but John Vickers, a Labour councillor for the area, has achieved a breakthrough and now confirmed one will be operational shortly.

Coun Vickers said: “The community’s requests to be able to cross safely on a stretch of road where both speeding and congestion occur has been knocked back for several years, until now with work on a long awaited zebra crossing in Hindley Green nearing completion.

“Shortly after I was elected in 2019 residents asked me for a zebra crossing at this well used crossing point on a very busy road which they felt was unsafe.“

Coun Vickers said that road safety in the area is a priority for him and that he wasn’t prepared to take no for an answer as he said the crossing was “much-needed” in the village.

He said: “I was aware there had been previous unsuccessful attempts to get a crossing here, but because pedestrian and road safety in Hindley Green is a priority for me I wasn’t prepared to take no for an answer.“

He added: “After over 12 months negotiation I am very pleased that the crossing will be operational shortly and will contribute to keeping our residents safe.”
