Protest against controversial Wigan church development cancelled
A protest against plans to bulldoze a church for housing has been cancelled.
Demonstrators had planned to gather outside St Peter’s Church, in Bryn, on Saturday (November 7) to oppose the homes.
But the second national lockdown has scuppered the demonstration until further notice.
Residents fear that drug users from the night shelters and hotels in Wigan would be housed in any new building..
Council chiefs insist the Jigsaw Homes development will be for families and supported accommodation for people experiencing things such as domestic violence.
A prior notification application by the developer was submtted to the council last month for the demolition of the church , outbuildings, two-storey vicarage and garage.
Works were expected to begin on November 3 and finish on December 7.
