Wigan Council says thank you to key workers

Wigan Council has shown its appreciation for staff working to keep essential services running during the Covid-19 pandemic by painting ‘"thank you" at the main entrances of Wigan Infirmary, Leigh Infirmary, Wigan Town Hall and Leigh Town Hall.

There is also a "thank you" message on Makerfield Way, the road leading to Makerfield depot, which has been transformed into the borough’s food and PPE distribution hub, and where the council’s waste collection crews are based.

The original idea for the messages came from a North West Ambulance Service staff member who is based in Wigan and said it would boost the morale for the whole borough.

The council’s contractor, KJ Lines, have painted the road markings at no cost.

Coun David Molyneux, leader of the council, said: “It is only right we continue doing everything we can to show how truly grateful we are to all the dedicated staff and key workers during this time. So many people are going above and beyond their normal duty to keep our residents safe and to keep things moving.

"The message is on behalf of everyone in our borough and we hope it helps to make staff smile and brighten their day on their way into work.

"I also hope residents continue to join us on Thursdays at 8pm when we’re showing our support by clapping for all frontline staff who continue to deliver essential services across the borough.”

Silas Nicholls, chief executive at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I’d like to thank Wigan Council for their support and paying tribute to our staff with the ‘thank you NHS’ messages. It’s a great way to show their appreciation to all our NHS and frontline services.

“I would like to add my heartfelt thanks to all those working in response to Covid-19 and providing services during this difficult time. To keep going and put others before yourself takes real bravery. I’m struck by the calm and focused way that everyone is approaching the pandemic.

He added: "It’s amazing to see this and shows how special my colleagues at WWL and beyond truly are.”
