A councillor has extended his grass-cutting mission to fields and verges in a Wigan community.

Complete with his own ride-on mower and trailer, Coun Steve Jones has been busy trimming green spaces around the Bryn ward he represents on Wigan Council.

The green-fingered councillor has been joined by Coun Bob Brierley as he bids to stop grass in the area getting too long.

Coun Jones said that some grass in the area had become “knee deep” due to the council stopping the service amid the coronavirus lockdown.

His latest grass cutting comes as he has also once again been busy sprucing up residents’ gardens in Bryn.

It is something that Coun Jones does every year and currently he is busy cutting the gardens of 20 people to give them the fresh air that they need while they self-isolate.

He said: “I’ve bought my own ride-on mower and trailer for £1,000 and have been busy cutting fields and grass verges.

“Due to the lockdown, council grass cutting services have understandably been reduced, so we thought we’d do our bit to help. “

And the pair have been working several hours a day trimming the grass - with Coun Jones aiming to have the whole of the estate finished in the next two weeks.

He said: “We want to give something back during the lockdown.

“I’ve been out on a daily basis several hours a day cutting the grass and hope to have the whole estate finished in the next two weeks.

“So hopefully when services do resume the grass won’t be really long.

“My own grass cutting in residents’ houses is something I do every year and it has really taken off this year with 20 people signing up already.

He added: “I’ve lived in Bryn all my life and just want to give something back.”

Independent representative for Hindley Green ward Coun Brierley has also been out and about with a mower keeping his local area spick and span during the coronavirus outbreak.

“It’s just to brighten the area up a bit and make people feel like there’s some normality even with the lockdown on.”
