The site, on 107 to 111 Market Street in Atherton, has lain empty for a number of years and become overgrown.

A row of three, two-storey buildings dating back to Victorian times had stood on the site, known as Atherton Steak House and The Bacca Shop.

Now plans have been submitted by Westhoughton-based developer DJK Building and Development limited to Wigan Council.

Proposals seek to build a modern self-contained three-storey building on the land which would house seven apartments and two commercial units.

Documents submitted as part of the application read: “The apartments will be a mixture of one and two bedrooms providing a good entry point on to the property ladder for future occupiers.”

There have been a number of recent planning applications with the most recent approval lapsing in April 2019, which was to erect a two-storey building comprising of retail units and offices.

The application said the development would provide a redevelopment opportunity and be of benefit to the area.
