The latest move comes after council teams worked hard to ensure the safe reopening of Wigan and Leigh Life Centres and libraries at the end of July.

Wigan Council has been keen to safely re-open libraries to the tens of thousands of members across the borough, recognising the important role they play in supporting residents, providing a hive of activity within local communities and preventing social isolation.

The removal of fines presents an opportunity for customers to return any undamaged library books collecting dust on a shelf at home, no matter how long it has been.

Coun Chris Ready, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “Libraries are an amazing resource within our communities offering a range of services for all ages.

“We don’t want the cost of fines to stop residents visiting a library or for them to be worried about mounting fees. If you haven’t been for a while now is the time to join, the library staff would love to welcome you.”

While the vast majority of libraries will be reopening from next Monday, Ashton Library remains closed until the new year due to building works.

The volunteer run library in Aspull will be reopening its doors to residents from Monday but Hope Library will remain closed.

Events and activities across the borough’s libraries are currently on hold due to social distancing measures but are due to be reintroduced when it is safe to do so.

Customers will be asked to replace any books that are lost by providing a new copy to their local library.
