Witnesses reported that the fire had been started maliciously, so police were informed and an investigation launched.

Carl Gleaves, watch manager at Wigan fire station, said his team had a busy night and deliberate fires such as this kept them away from other incidents.

He said: "People should be vigilant and look out and be aware that, for whatever reason, people seem to be targeting vehicles."

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call police on 101.
