A FORMER pub could be knocked down to make way for housing for disabled people.

Harbour Light Assisted Living CIC has submitted an application to Wigan Council’s planners to replace the former Bowling Green on Ormskirk Road, Newtown, with 12 self-contained flats, car parking and communal gardens.

Harbour Light is a not-for-profit organisation which is commissioned by councils and health bodies to provide housing and services that help folk with disabilities live independently.

The pub closed in February last year after chain owners Gee Taverns revoked the landlord and landlady’s licence.

The move angered Bowling Green customers who started a petition threatening to boycott it in future if the chain did not allow the couple to remain.
