Rail commuters faced delays on their way into work after a body was found on the line.
Services running through Wigan Wallgate to Manchester ran late for several hours while the British Transport Police (BTP) attended the scene of the tragic incident close to Southport station on Thursday morning.
The grim discovery at around 6.10am meant the services’ usual platform could not be used, causing the delays.
Some early-morning services were either started at Parbold or terminated there, but Northern said all trains were running the full length of the route by around 9am.
Journeys were around five minutes longer than normal for much of Thursday morning. The platform for Wigan to Manchester services re-opened at 10,55am.
