A MAN has died after being hit by a Wigan-bound morning train.

Emergency services were called to Coppull at 6.30am this morning (Tuesday) after the incident, which caused delays of more than an hour.

The train, which had left for Preston, was heading to Birmingham New Street via Wigan North Western.

Commuters heading in both directions were affected with some northbound services terminated at Wigan.

The lines were fully opened once again around three hours later.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Our officers were called out to an area near Spendmore Lan in Coppull at 6.30am, following reports of a person being struck by a train.

“Colleagues from North West Ambulance Service also attended but a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious

“Officers are now working to establish the identity of the person and inform their next of kin. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
