Record leads police to thief

DETECTIVES identified a Wigan thief from CCTV because of her “extensive” record.

Staff in Marks and Spencers in Standishgate called in police after they found a pile of men’s shirts missing and an officer recognised Lynn Woosey, 38, of Crompton House in Scholes as the culprit, during a review of security film.

Prosecutor at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court Jane Kearsley said that her face was identified because she has 36 convictions for 80 offences on her record – 41 of them for incidents of dishonesty.

Woosey, who admitted the theft, was seen by the camera to enter the store and throw her coat over the 10 shirts, worth more than £129, before gathering up the entire bundle and walking out of the shop while making no attempt to pay.

Melissa Fagan (defending) said that Woosey took the shirts to sell when her benefits stopped.

Her case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report.
