A NUMBER of cases involving defendants from Wigan who were due before magistrates at Liverpool’s crown and magistrates courts have been adjourned because of a sewage overflow in the cells.

Hearings were disrupted today (Fri) as a sewage overflow in the cells means that no prisoners can be housed there.

Cases involving prisoners already in custody and due to be brought to the courts were adjourned and anyone who is sentenced to imprisonment or remanded in custody today are being taken by dock officers to a waiting prison van.

It is currently unknown whether the problem will have been resolved by Monday.
