Resident left in bed all day as it was '˜easier'

Westwood Lodge in Poolstock has been rated as inadequate by health regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC) which raised concerns about staffing, preventing the spread of infectious diseases and the management of medicines.

Inspectors also raised concerns about the way residents were treated after discovering one resident was kept in bed because of their “challenging behaviour” and because they “shouted at other residents”.

The CQC has issued the home with a warning notice and ordered it to meet the conditions of it by February 5.

The home was also issued warning notices and told to improve the level of staffing, an effective system to prevent the spread of infectious disease, the safe management of medicines and effective governance and auditing systems in place to monitor their service.

The inspection was the second in less than sixth months after areas of the service were found not to be meeting legal requirements by inspectors in March and April.

A spokesman for the home said: “The wellbeing, safety and health of the individuals we support are our top priorities.

“We are very sorry that the home has fallen short of the high standards residents and their loved ones expect and deserve, and that we pride ourselves on.

“We take the CQC’s feedback extremely seriously and have been working very hard over the last five months to address all of the issues raised.

“We have implemented a robust action plan which includes additional staff training, an enhanced monitoring processes and recruiting a new and experienced home manager.

“We hope to demonstrate the significant progress we have made at our next inspection.”
