A MAJOR road leading into Wigan will remain shut into next week because of further problems following a sewer collapse.
United Utilities staff have been on site on Preston Road, just north of Pepper Lane in Standish, since January 27.
It was hoped that the road would be re-opened this week but, despite the repair to the first collapse being completed, workers have had to deal with two further bursts and a blockage.
A spokesman for United Utilities said: “The work is unfortunately going to continue into next week. We carried out the original repair on the sewer pipe as planned, but then had to deal with two further bursts and have now discovered a blockage.
“The work is really difficult for our engineers because this is a 700m long underground pipe with no manholes along its length we can use to get to the sewer to have a proper look at it. We need to dig down to see what’s happening, which takes time to do and then repair.
“We appreciate people are frustrated with this route being closed, but please bear with us and we will get the work finished as quickly as possible so the road is safe for everyone to use.”
