ROAD users are facing huge problems this morning as one of Wigan’s most used routes into town has been closed.
A hole formed on Wigan Lower Road on Friday after a sewer collapse and has got larger over the course of the weekend.
Initially temporary traffic lights were placed at the scene, at the bottom of Spelding Drive, but it was soon shut off completely.
At this stage, it isn’t yet clear as to how long work will take to repair the road and no timescale has been placed on when it will be reopened.
Neil Shepherd, senior highway inspector at Wigan Council, said: “The council was informed in the morning of Friday, October 19 by several residents that there was a collapse on Wigan Lower Road in Standish Lower Ground, close to the junction with Spelding Drive.
“Officers have been out to investigate and found a collapse in the road approximately four foot deep. Initial investigations indicate this is a sewer collapse.”
It has been confirmed by United Utilities this morning that a collapsed sewer is the reason for the collapse.
Diversions have been put in place through Standish and Kitt Green.
