An armed robber threatened a terrified cashier with a claw hammer.
Police have today released CCTV images of the man they would like to speak to following the incident at Bargain Beer Plus on Woodhouse Lane in Wigan at around 9.55pm on Monday, August 29.
A man, described as white, around 30-years-old, 5ft 6ins tall, clean shaven, with a Wigan accent and wearing a hoody and black trousers, demanded the only member of staff open the till.
The cashier managed to flee the store and briefly lock the offender inside. But he managed to escape through the door before returning to the store to pick up an item he had left behind the counter and a quantity of tobacco.
Detective sergeant Peter Carletti, of GMP’s Wigan borough, said: “This was a cowardly act by a man who armed himself with a potentially dangerous weapon and threatened a member of staff.
“Thankfully, the incident did not result in any injuries, but this was a terrifying ordeal that no one should ever have to contemplate enduring when they go to work.
“We are appealing to the public to look at the CCTV images captured that night and to get in touch if they recognise this man or have any information which could help our investigation.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police on 101 and quote the incident number 2718 of 29/08/16, or alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
