A WIGAN council chief has collapsed and died, aged just 51.

Sue Johnson, the Metro’s deputy chief executive, was taken ill on Wednesday while staying with friends overnight in Wigan, and was rushed to the Infirmary, where she passed away.

The news sent shockwaves through the town hall, and left many council staff in tears.

The mother-of-one lived in Wrexham, with her husband Ken and son Mathew. She joined Wigan Council in 2007 from Knowsley, where she was director of programmes and transformation.

An accountant with more than 20 years’ experience, she had worked in a variety of senior posts across the public sector, in both local government and the NHS.

During her time at Wigan, she was responsible for managing the council’s wide-ranging improvement programme, and she played a key role in Wigan’s drive towards transforming local public services.
