A CONVICTED shoplifter who twice breached suspended sentence orders has been jailed.

Simon Hughes was brought back before Wigan Magistrates’ Court after missing a probation service appointment on May 7.

The 23-year-old admitted breaching not one, but two suspended sentence orders in the process, but his solicitor, Mark Ferguson, claimed there were extenuating circumstances.

He told the court Hughes had dislocated his knee in Leigh town centre and had been kicked out of the house he had been released to on a curfew.

Mr Ferguson admitted that “part of him (Hughes) feels like chucking the towel in and going to prison” but argued that the original order was still viable.

He added that Hughes, of Brewery Lane, Leigh, had not committed any offence since the order began at the end of last year.

Magistrates opted to activate Hughes’s four-month suspended sentence.
