Snow problem - gritters are ready

AN army of gritters is on stand-by as Wigan braces itself for the first big wintry blast of the season - the first flakes falling on the town overnight.

As the Met Office forecast imminent ice and more snow, Wigan Council’s trucks have already been out on the roads spreading rock salt. The council has been stockpiling grit, and in August, there were 4,000 tonnes already in the new salt barn at Sovereign Road, Lower Ince, the first of its type in the country.

Coun Kevin Anderson, the cabinet member for the environment, said: “We all should feel a lot of pride for the team and their work – often unseen – keeping the borough safe and motoring the roads.”
