Statuettes to go on sale for WHAMM appeal

The marquettes have been produced by Roxy Winterburn, the daughter of sculptor Steve Winterburn, who has been commissioned to create the main statute, paying homage to the town's mining heritage and which will include a miner, a lad and a pit brow lass.

Wigan Heritage and Mining Monument (WHAMM) has announced this week that the small statues will be available to buy in a limited edition - first come, first served.

They will be made of heavy duty resin and will be 18 centimetres high.

In addition, Steve has sculpted the head of a pit pony, which will also be available on the same basis.

Sheila Ramsdale, WHAMM chairman, said: "We are very fortunate to have found two scupltors who are not only very gifted but who are passionate about the subject.

"The more we talk to local people about the project, the more we realise how keen Wiganers are to honour our mining past.

"The sale of these statuettes will help us towards our fundraising target and will be a lasting memento for those who are fortunate to be able to buy these unique pieces."

The fund stands at £50,000 after it was initially set up courtesy of a £30,000 anonymous donation. The aim is to raise a £10,000 surplus for the finished installation.

The statutettes will be on show at the WHAMM stall at the Diggers Festival this Saturday, where members will be on hand to talk about the project.
