RAIL services around Wigan were disrupted by damage to overhead power lines.

Storms are thought to have been the cause of the problems close to Wigan North Western station which engineers from Network Rail managed to repair after two hours.

They were called out at 11.40am on Wednesday to the line which runs between Wigan and Liverpool and several services were halted.

Northern Rail, which runs many of the services in the area, was unable to run its electric trains for the next two hours but put on diesels on the hour between Wigan and Lime Street instead and a bus service from Wigan to Preston, taking in Euxton and Leyland en route.

A spokesman for Northern Rail said that normal services resumed shortly after 1pm.
