THIS was the scene as a Wigan road was cordoned off and tenants evacuated as a town centre street caved-in.
A burst water pipe had caused pavement and a section of road, outside Compi-Claims on busy Hallgate, to sink several feet below street level.
A Wigan Council spokesman said: “Hallgate has been closed off following a water leak that’s led to a building becoming structurally unsound.
“A number of properties have been evacuated. United Utilities and officers from the council’s building control and highways departments are at the scene.
“Some residents will have to stay in hotel accommodation overnight.”
