The blue Ford Fiesta left the road on Whiteleys Lane, Ormskirk, at around 7.40pm on Monday, colliding with a hedge and overturning in a field.

He was taken to Aintree Hospital for treatment and police said he is currently in a critical condition.

Three men, who were passengers in the vehicle, suffered minor injuries and were treated at Southport Hospital.

The road was closed for four hours while accident investigators attended.

Temp Sgt Lee Harris, of Lancashire Police, said: “We are appealing for information following a serious collision in Ormskirk.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened or saw the vehicle involved in the moments before the collision.
