FORMER Wigan rugby star, Terry Newton, had taken such a cocktail of drugs that he may not have known what he was doing when he hanged himself.

Coroner Jennifer Leeming told a hushed inquest that there was no way she could be sure that the one time Great Britain player was able to “form an appropriate judgement” as to the nature and quality of his actions. So while he undoubtedly took his own life she recorded an open verdict in to the Orrell dad’s death.

The Bolton hearing was told that traces of numerous substances - including performance enhancing steroids, cocaine, amphetamine plus prescription anti-anxiety and painkiller medication - were found in samples taken after his death.

None was of a fatal level.
