A WIGAN dad told his ex-partner he had paid someone to beat her up after she started a relationship with his cousin.

Matthew Bennett, 20, of Culcross Avenue, Highfield, admitted to harassment without violence between September 1 and 20 when he appeared at Wigan Magistrates’ Court.

Mike Ardern, prosecuting, said that after Bennett’s relationship with Louise Jones ended and she started dating his cousin, he sent her 20 texts a day.

One said he had paid someone £100 to “batter” her, and another said he hoped her family members would get cancer. He also threatened her in the street.

When interviewed, Bennett, who has a 19-month-old child with Ms Jones, admitted the offences, but said he had never paid anyone to assault her.

Colin Rawson, defending, said: “He has apologised, knowing he made an error in judgement.” Bennett was given a 12-month community order, and ordered to pay £50 compensation, £60 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
