A THREE-old Wigan girl suffered a bruised cheek because she got in the way of changing a nappy.

Aiden Taylor, of Keats Avenue, Worsley Mesnes, admitted assaulting the youngster when he appeared before Wigan magistrates.

Prosecuting, Andrew Hey said the 21-year-old was sitting on a bed at a house in Worsley Mesnes, changing a six-month-old tot’s nappy and the victim was standing at the side.

As the baby turned to look at the girl, she rolled over, making it difficult for him to perform the task. He told the child to move and pushed her away. The girl then moved to the other side of the bed and tapped his left arm.

Mr Hey said: “He raised his left arm and using the flat of the palm of the hand, he slapped her across the right hand side of her face. She cried hysterically and received a small bruise and reddening of the cheek.” He added that the youngster was extremely emotional.

Taylor, who has no previous convictions, originally denied the allegation and a trial date was set, but he later changed his plea.

Andrea Woods, defending, said: “Taylor has found the proceedings particularly difficult to deal with. There have been no previous police call-outs of domestic-related matters.

“These allegations are out of character for him. This was not an ideal set of circumstances and he does not condone slapping children.”

She added that the girl’s mother had made three separate statements, the second of which she retracted saying it was blown out of proportion.

Taylor was given a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months and must do unpaid work for one year. He was also ordered to pay £100 costs, a victim surcharge of £80 and £200 compensation to the child.

The chairman of the magistrates said: “It is deplorable that you assaulted a three-year-old child in her own house, causing injury and emotionally traumatised her.”
