A DRUNKEN thug who punched his ex-girlfriend in the face, smashing her jaw in two places, has been jailed for 12 months.

A court heard that Ryan Houghton had been hoping to get back with Hayley McAuley but when she turned him down he suddenly struck her.

Sentencing him the judge, Recorder Richard Pratt, QC, said he accepted it had been a single blow but it had been a “substantial” one.

Harry Pepper, prosecuting, said that the couple started a relationship last November but they broke up on May 10 after arguing and because he would become violent when drunk.

On May 16 Miss McAuley went to a bar in King Street, Wigan, with friends and saw that he was also in the premises.

At about 2am she went to the toilet and in the adjacent corridor she came across Houghton, who was said to be very drunk.

He asked if they could get back together but she said they could not and put her palms on his cheeks to comfort and calm him, said Mr Pepper.

But when she put her hands down he punched her once to the jaw knocking her to the floor.

He stepped over her prone body and left but was later arrested.

Later that morning she went to Wigan Infirmary A&E but was transferred to Manchester Royal Infirmary and treated for a double fracture to her jaw.

She underwent surgery to insert two metal plates and had to have braces fitted.

In an impact statement Miss McAuley said that she was still in pain following the incident.

Houghton, of Hector Road, Marsh Green, pleaded guilty to a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Recorder Pratt imposed a three-year restraining order to keep away from his victim.

Martyn Walsh, defending, said that Houghton has no previous convictions and had pleaded guilty.
