COMMUNITY groups in Wigan have just over a week to apply for their share of an £81,000 funding pot.

Award-winning funding scheme Grassroots Giving, run by Skipton Building Society, is offering organisations across the borough the chance to apply for a £500 donation.

Applications close on July 31 and the organisers are urging Wigan groups not to miss out as they say there have been few expressions of interest from the borough.

Now in its third year, Grassroots Giving has handed out more than £160,500 to small community organisations across the country who stand out for the work they do in their area.

Roy Prenton from Skipton’s Grassroots Giving team said: “Grassroots Giving is all about helping small community groups that usually struggle to gain any kind of financial support.

“Our scheme has far exceeded our expectations, demonstrating that many local community groups need this help and support.

“This is why we moved from solely giving money to providing free resources and support to help these groups grow and succeed.

“The application process is really quick and straightforward, so I’d like to appeal to anyone who’s a member of a small local, club, group or organisation in the region to visit the Grassroots Giving website and apply for a share of our funding.”

Last year’s scheme saw 28,000 public votes cast to give 161 groups across the country £500 each to help fund projects.
