Peter McGhee, Principal of St John Rigby College, has been appointed as one of seven National Leaders of Further Education (NLFE) and is the only Sixth Form College Principal in the country to have been asked by the FE Commissioner to undertake this role.

The purpose of the role is to support other colleges in need of improvement and replicates the success that the equivalent roles have had in schools.

In addition to recognising the skills and capacity that the NLFEs have to assist improvements in other colleges, this initiative also identifies that the senior leaders and middle leaders with whom they work can also provide expertise, support and examples of best practice to their counterparts in underperforming colleges.

This appointment, the only one of its kind in the North West of England, raises the profile of high quality education in Wigan and the outstanding practice that exists at St John Rigby College.

Mr McGhee said: “It is a privilege to have been appointed to undertake work which will support and benefit other colleges.

“I believe that this bears testament to the outstanding work taking place at St John Rigby College and is a reminder that this is of national significance, St John Rigby College being one of only four sixth form colleges in the country judged by Ofsted to be outstanding in every aspect under the terms of the Ofsted framework.

“It is entirely proper that the NLFE role recognises the skills and talents of my colleagues, since it is their tireless efforts and their work with our remarkable students that has brought about outstanding results and student progress of national significance.

“We are very happy to share our strengths with other colleges while always looking to learn from others to ensure that SJR continues to improve and remains at the forefront of performance and developments in sixth form and further education.

“I am also delighted that St John Rigb is helping to raise the profile of Wigan and the many exceptional things that take place in our

borough.”
