'˜George was just a wonderful talented person' - tributes paid after young man's tragic death

George Robinson was 26 years old and had bravely battled a colitis-related illness for nearly seven years, undergoing several bouts of major surgery.

Since his tragic and untimely passing, friends and family alike have been remembering the shy, studious yet funny and quick-witted young man, who was loved and adored in equal measure by all who knew him.

His reserved side was reflected in the way he bravely fought his debilitating illness, with others rarely being made aware of the constant battles he was facing both physically and mentally.

George enjoyed his younger years playing rugby league for Shevington Sharks where he gained the nickname ‘Classy George’, not only for his incredible talent but also his attitude and demeanour.

The former Deanery High School pupil was well-known for his skilful running on the ball and incredible determination and strength in defence off it.

Even though his talents on the pitch earned him countless individual awards, it was his attitude and kind-hearted nature off it for which George will be truly remembered.

George lived with his family in Standish Lower Ground who have today said how appreciative they are for all the support, tributes and messages they have received at this extremely difficult time.

As news of George’s passing on December 8 filtered through to those who knew him, stunned and devastated friends and former teammates paid their respects.

One such person was Steven Melling, his former coach at Shevington Sharks.

He said: "I had the absolute privilege to coach George for a few fantastic years and he was just such a wonderful talented person, both on and off the paddock.

"He was held in such high regard by all who had the pleasure of his company. That his teammates tagged him 'Classy George' speaks volumes."

George’s funeral will be held at St Anne’s Church in Shevington at 11am on Friday, December 28.

All friends and family are then later invited to share memories of George at Wrightington Country Club.

The family has requested no flowers but would welcome donations to be made in memory of George to charities Mind and Chrohn’s and Colitis UK.
