Initial reports to Wigan Today suggested a man was also in the water, but it is thought this was not the case.

Police, fire crews and paramedics went to Central Park Way, in Wigan town centre, to look for the woman.

A fire service spokesman said: "Three fire engines from Wigan, Hindley and Eccles attended the scene along with specialist support from the water incident unit, technical response unit and a search and rescue dog.

"The police helicopter also assisted the search."

They could not find the woman and called off the search at 1.30am, before it resumed on Saturday morning.
