RAIL commuters in Wigan and Leigh were delayed after a woman on a mobility scooter fell on the tracks.

The woman sustained head injuries as she fell onto the line at Hag Fold Station, in Atherton, shortly after noon on Saturday.

Trains from Salford Crescent to Wigan Wallgate were temporarily delayed as a result.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We were called to Hag Fold station just after 12pm on Saturday, May 23, after reports of a person on the line.

“Officers attended, as did colleagues from North West Ambulance Service, and discovered a woman on a mobility scooter had fallen onto the tracks.

“The woman was not struck by a train, but appears to have suffered serious injuries and was taken to Salford Royal Hospital for treatment.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”
