Burst water pipe on busy Wigan road causes problems for residents and drivers

Homes and businesses lost their water supply and motorists faced delays after a pipe burst on a busy road.

Water poured onto Wigan Road in New Springs throughout Friday, with engineers called to repair the problem.

Wigan Today reader and keen photographer Chris Winstanley took these pictures at 4pm on Friday to show the extent of the issue.

He said: "It had been a problem from early on today with a loss of pressure for a lot of residents, some even had their water cut off. The water, when the flags were taken, up was gushing up to three feet high and at one point Wigan Road looked like a small river, but by the time I had got there they had stemmed the flow somewhat.

"There were four large 30' water tankers, two parked on the Crown pub car park and two parked in the traffic lane on the main road to try to ensure a water supply for the residents."
