Further £369k awarded for Wigan's pothole fund

The cash is from the Department for Transport and is in addition to the £500,000 pledged from council funds by council leader, Lord Smith.

It comes as council chiefs have announced the locations of roads set to benefit from repairs paid for by the £500k funding pot.

No plans have been revealed on where the £369k funding will be spent. But it is seen as a timely boost for the council, who have reiterated their commitment to fixing the borough’s road.

The teams tackling potholes across Wigan Borough have been doubled in the last few weeks in order to repair as many as possible.

The council spends more than £1m maintaining 1,100km of roads and mends around 14,000 road defects, including potholes, a year.

Paul Barton, director for environment, said: “We are aware of the public concern around the number of potholes on our roads and are doing everything we can to tackle them.

"We welcome this extra boost of money and will now allocate it to the roads which need repairing as a priority.”
