The northbound lane has been closed this morning due to a defect in the road surface, between junctions 13 (Stafford South) and 14 (Stafford North).

Highways say the lane will remain closed throughout the day with repairs expected to be completed overnight before reopening tomorrow morning (Thursday, January 7).

The closure is in force for the right-hand lane (for overtaking) and is leading to severe congestion as traffic is unable to overtake two-lanes of lorry traffic on some busy stretches of the northbound carriageway.

It is likely to lead to delays for those travelling north towards Lancashire and the North West today.

Live traffic reports say there is currently around four miles of queuing traffic and delays of around 40 minutes are expected during the morning peak.

A Highways spokesman said: "The M6 northbound J13 (StaffordSouth, A449) to J14 (Stafford North, A34), 1 lane has been closed due to a defect in the road surface.
