TRANSPORT police have isued a warning to Wigan youngsters after a steep rise in vandalism on the railways
Worried officers have been prompted to speak out after seeing a growing number of problems.
Reports have increased during the last few days, particularly around Miry Lane and Saddle Junction.
PC Martin Round, who covers the area for BTP’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “There have been problems in the area for some time, but they had died down.
“Since New Year, though, there has been an upturn in problematic behaviour and we have had reports of trespass, criminal damage and stone throwing.
“We simply will not tolerate any behaviour which causes issues for the railway and will now be stepping up patrols in the area in a bid to deter those responsible.
“We are also working closely with colleagues in Greater Manchester Police to identify the offenders.”
PC Round also believes the culprits are taking unnecessary risks.
He added: “The offenders are also putting their own lives on the line. To carry out their criminal and anti-social behaviour they are taking the risk of being struck by a train.
“We do not want to tell any family that their son or daughter will not be coming home.”
