AN off-duty policeman was assaulted by a boy said to be just nine years old.

The young traveller was quizzed by officers after hitting the 49-year-old at Gathurst Golf Club.

Police were called to the Miles Lane course, whose car park had been occupied for several days by travellers, on Tuesday evening after receiving reports of fighting.

They found one of their colleagues, who had been playing golf at the club, had been attacked but suffered no injuries.

A force spokesman said a boy was dealt with by means of restorative justice. He was said to be nine but a source told the Evening Post that there were suspicions he was older. The travellers have now moved on.
