Tributes paid to rugby league gentleman Eddie

Eddie Moylett passed away on Thursday at the age of 77.

A popular and devoted clubman, his loss has left all at Wigan St Jude’s deeply saddened.

While rugby league was his passion though, Eddie was very much a family man and they have today led the tributes to a beloved father and grandfather.

In a statement they said: “He always had time for his friends, family and the club and always made everybody laugh.

“The club is what kept him going all these years, it’s what he lived for and it’s where all his extended family are.”

St Jude’s themselves also paid tribute to a man who has been a constant at Parsons Meadow for decades.

A statement read: “It is with great sadness that we inform the rugby league community of the passing of former Wigan St Jude’s chairman Eddie Moylett. Eddie has seen the club form from its foundations to where it is today.

“After Eddie finished his duties as chairman he followed Jude’s home and away and was always the first one in the coach for away games and enjoyed a pint after the game. Rest in peace Eddie.”

Tributes also flooded in from players and fans at St Jude’s on the club’s official Facebook page.

Martin Cunningham said: “ What an absolute lovely man as a player he always supported me and he has continued this into my coaching days

“Always loved having a cheeky pint on a Sunday afternoon when I was ‘picking my bag up’.

“He loved the club, he loved the area, we all loved him, god rest Eddie. Respect x”

Silas Mubanda wrote: “When I got a job at HJ Heinz in Wigan Eddie personally instructed his daughter to look after me, and I remember this lady coming over to my department occasionally to check on me, and asked if I was OK, and told me that she was instructed by her dad to make sure I was having it ok.

“Now what more is there to live for on life? That simply describes Eddie, my glass would never be half empty at the club house, I can still fully remember that heavy pitch base voice. ‘Manoooo’ I’ll get you a pint son. Sad that real people are leaving us on our own on this planet in these times.”

Joe Charnock from Wigan St Pat’s said: “Great guy and as you say loved his rugby. Also a former dedicated St Pat’s lad and still respected by many to this day.”
