TRIBUTES have been paid to the Wigan teenager who died in a cliff fall tragedy just days before his 17th birthday.

Toby Hart, from Lowton, was fatally injured while holidaying with his family in Cornwall.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that a 16-year-old had fallen 40 to 50ft while attempting to cross a cliff face with a friend at Cadgwith Cove on the Lizard Peninsula near Helston on Sunday.

A statement said: “Members of the public on the beach attempted to give first aid and HM Coastguard attended the scene along with ambulance crews. He was flown to Royal Cornwall hospital in Truro by helicopter.

“He later died from injuries sustained, his family were at his bedside.”

Tributes have poured in from devastated family and friends on social networking sites. A Facebook tribute page called “Rest in paradise, Toby Hart” has already attracted more than 1,200 likes.

One tribute read: “It just shows what a lovely person Toby was with all this support. He will be forever making people laugh wherever he is. We will all miss you so much.”

One said: “Words won’t begin to describe how much you are going to be missed. Your cheeky charm, your little jokes, your little hair flick you do.

“I just know that you’re looking down on us all protecting us.”

Another read: “It was a pleasure to have known you even though it was only for a short time. You have been taken away too early.”

It is understood that the Orrell St John Rigby College student, who would have celebrated his birthday on Friday, was on holiday with his parents and younger brother.

Police also confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Headteacher of Toby’s former school, Lowton CE High, John Shanahan, said: “Toby was well liked and respected by both students and staff.

“He took a full and active part in all aspects of school life until leaving last year.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very difficult time. Everyone is deeply saddened to hear of his sudden death.”
