So the pupils attending one Wigan school decided to do their own bit to help.

Together with their teachers the children who attend St John Fisher Catholic High School have made face shields for the NHS - and a batch of 100 have been delivered to Wigan Hospital. Technology technician Silvia Gonzalez and senior science technician Sue Evans came up with the idea.

Silvia said: “We got the template from YouTube. The masks were laser cut on the laser cutter in the technology department.

“The materials used were 0.5-0.8mm polypropylene, something a lot of suppliers are running out of rapidly so I am not sure how many more masks we have enough stock for.

“If anyone has any they could donate that would be amazing.

“And so far we have used A4 acetate sheets for the front screen, we will be trying A4 laminating pouches this week to see if they are clear after been put through the laminator.

“If they are then that will keep us going for a bit longer.

“After they are laser cut, they are then hand assembled by an amazing team effort from staff and pupils.

“It was great team work by everyone involved including our pupils of key workers, our canteen staff and the amazing team at Kitronics and Smoke and Shields who very kindly shared their designs online.

“We have also donated all our science goggles to help the NHS.”

Head teacher Alison Rigby said: “It is a difficult, challenging time for our pupils and their families and the more we can do as a school to help our wider community and the NHS, the

better.

“Our staff have been incredible in going the extra mile to support our children and ensure their learning continues outside the school gates.

“I am very proud of what we have achieved so far and this is another example of our community spirit.”

A spokesperson for Wigan ICU said: “This is wonderful and this will definitely help us so much.”
