Wigan church torn down to make way for controversial plans

St Peter's Church and vicarage, in Bryn, has been torn down as part of plans by developer Jigsaw Homes to build houses.

Details of the plans will be revealed in a planning application which is expected to be submitted in the coming weeks.

However locals have raised concerns any homes would be for drug users from the night shelters and hotels in Wigan.

But Wigan Council chiefs have given assurances that accommodation will not include direct access from the night shelter and will include family homes and supported accommodation for people experiencing things such as domestic violence.

The church had been closed to worshippers since 2016 after it was closed due to the poor condition of the building.

The building datesd from the early 1960s and was a distinctive brick construction with reinforced concrete decks with asphalt for the roof.

The contents of it included furniture from the early 1960s designed especially for the church, a carillion and keyboard, abstract stained glass and several war memorials.
