Wigan man taken to hospital with burns after trying to tackle fire in garage

Smoke billowing from a garage blaze was so thick that firefighters could barely see down the street when they arrived to tackle it.

Crews were called to Whiteside Avenue in Hindley at 8.45pm on Thursday when the fire broke out in the detached building.

They spent four hours working to bring the blaze under control and managed to stop the flames spreading to nearby houses.

The blaze, which caused considerable damage to the garage, is believed to have started accidentally.
