Last week the Wigan Observer appealed for readers to send Harry birthday cards.

And his great-nephew Matthew Melling, known to most as The Wigan Runner, wad delighted to reveal that his uncle received more than 650 cards!

“It’s unbelievable! I can’t thank everyone enough for making him feel special,” Matthew said.

“He’s seen how many people in Wigan are fond of him.

“He even got cards from Australia and Canada. It’s just incredible.

“I want to say a massive thank you to everyone that sent him a card or a message through social media.”

Local businesses even joined in with the celebrations, Heinz and Uncle Joes Mint Balls in particularly surprised Harry with gifts, which Matthew described as “phenomenal.”

He said: “This is why Wigan is the best town in the world.

“[Harry] also spoke on a video call with people high up in the Royal Navy.

“The Royal Marines band also stood in formation and sang Happy Birthday for him. They all went to great lengths for my uncle Harry.”

Matthew added: “He’s really enjoyed it, he’s enjoyed being fussed over! I’m looking forward to when this is all over and everything is back to normal. We’re going to make sure he has a proper party, we want to invite anyone who sent him a card or wishes.”

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.
