WIGAN commuters were shocked to see a van driven off a busy main road and smash into traffic lights during peak time on Tuesday morning.

The white van careered into the crossing near to the railway bridge on Ormskirk Road, just off the Saddle Junction.

Greater Manchester Police is now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle in the lead up to the incident or the crash itself to get in touch. The driver is understood to have not sustained any significant injuries as a result of the collision. The road was sanded to clean up spilt oil but the lane closures were not required, the police said. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Our officers were called at just after 7.30am and are interested to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision, please contact Wigan Police on 101.”
