A WIGAN man has been left fighting for his life amid claims he was viciously assaulted in front of stunned shoppers.

Dennis Unsworth was rushed to hospital following an incident at the back of the town centre Iceland store in Standishgate shortly before 5pm on Tuesday.

Prosecutors allege that Mr Unsworth was repeatedly kicked to the head and torso “with force” as he lay on the ground - before a store security guard intervened.

The victim, 33, of Spring View, later had to be transferred to an intensive care ward at Salford Royal for surgery to stem a bleed on his brain.

He then continued to drop in and out of consciousness and require the assistance of a ventilator. Police had yesterday still not been able to interview him.

Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court heard how Mr Unsworth had been out drinking with his sister, Lisa, and the defendant before the incident unfolded.

In the dock is Damien McKeown, 32, of Leigh Road, Atherton.

Justices committed the case to Liverpool Crown Court where McKeown, who has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, is due to appear on September 24.

He was remanded in custody until that date and is yet to enter a plea.
