VIDEO: Wigan gran fears for family's safety after racial abuse

Monika Zeid Egerova, a Czech woman living in Platt Bridge, said that England is “the most racist” place she has ever been.

The 48-year-old accountant, who has lived in Wigan for 11 years, said she is concerned for the welfare of her children and grandchild after all her appeals for help have failed.

“I’m so disappointed and frustrated,” said Monika. “My son cannot even go out and face people anymore he is suffering so much with his mental health.

“I came to Britain thinking I would have a better life but now every single day I want to scream I am the most upset I have ever been.

“I have a lot of friends and an amazing manager and colleagues but I come home from work, where I am safe, and we are completely unsafe.”

Monika moved to the UK in 2008 to bring up her children.

The globe-trotting gran, who lived in Germany, Italy and Egypt, has said that the problems have become even worse since the EU referendum.

“Since Brexit, everything is getting worse,” she added. “People are more racist than ever.

“I have been told to go back to Poland, I’m not even Polish.

“I could write a book about what it is really like to live in Britain.”

Monika and her family have been victims of criminal damage on numerous occasions when vandals have damaged her car, her husband’s car and her clients’ cars.

Terrified, one of her daughters installed CCTV but that too was vandalised.

Monika said that she would move back to the Czech Republic, “in a minute” if she could, but would be able to see her grandchildren - who are all British citizens. “I would go now and never enter this country again,” added the devastated gran. “But unfortunately I cannot do this. I have four grandchildren - all of whom are British citizens.

“I feel sorry for them having to grow up with this.”

Monika said that she has been offered another house by Wigan Council, but she does not want to move because of the expenses involved and the money they have invested in the family home where they have lived for a decade.

Monika says that the police have been unable to make any arrests due to a lack of evidence.

“I don’t feel protected in my own country,” she said. “I do the right thing, I work I pay my taxes - I am supposed to be paying taxes for things like this.

“These people being racist, a lot of them don’t have jobs. They are ignorant.

“At the end of the day I have been here a long time, I came here because I thought I would have a better life, but it just isn’t my home anymore.”
